Blackbrook House Resident Receives Arctic Medal In Portsmouth

27th June 2013

Today (27th June 2013) one of the residents of Blackbrook House was very proud to receive an Arctic Star Medal for services to the Royal Navy between 1941 and 1945. This historic presentation took place at Portsmouth's Guildhall Square this morning.

Veterans of the Arctic Convoy have campaigned for over 15 years to be recognised for sailors' bravery during WW2. Over 65,000 Royal Navy sailors and merchant seamen dodged German planes and U-boats to supply the Soviet ports with supplies during the war. Without their sterling efforts, Germany may have quickly won the battle on the Eastern Front only to place their full attention on Britain.

Nearly 100 merchant ships and 16 Royal Navy vessels were lost, along with over 3000 sailors during the campaign. Today there are 200 surviving sailors from the Arctic Convoy campaign.
