Blackbrook Resident Awarded Ushakov Medal By Vladimir Putin

20th October 2014

Blackbrook House are extremely proud to have heard that one of our residents is to receive the Ushakov Medal by decree of Vladimar Putin. The medals have been struck and are to be given to just 30 veterans of the arctic convoys. The men played a crucial role in getting supplies to the people of Russia during the war, and the Russian Embassy said that without the convoys the Germans would not have been defeated on the Eastern Front. Indeed, Churchill spoke about the Arctic convoys' missions through the North Sea in winter as being 'the worst journey on earth'.

Next week our resident is to be presented with his medal at The Russian Embassy in London, a proud occasion which we are looking forward to.

You can find out more about the Arctic Convoys on the BBC website here.
